The 1st of May in many countries (though not New Zealand) is International Workers' Day, also known as 'May Day'. It celebrates the labour and left-wing movements. For over eighty countries, such as Italy, the day is a public holiday. Italy's first Festa del Lavoro was in 1890; celebrating the progression and accomplishments of workers in their desire and battle for both a social and economic improvement. Although the Fascist Regime abolished Festa del Lavoro, it was reinstated after World War II, and remains an important day of celebration for the Italians.
