Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita
mu ritrovai per una selva oscura,
ché la diritta via era smarrita.
Ahi quanto a dir qual era è cosa dura
esta selva selvaggia e aspra e forte
che nel pensier rinova la paura!
In the middle of the journey of our life, I came
to myself in a dark wood where the straight
way was lost.
Ah! how hard a thing it is to tell what a wild,
and rough, and stubborn wood this was, which
in my thought renews the fear.
